CAVALIERS AS COMPANIONS
Whether you live in an apartment, or a castle, this majestic little dog makes an excellent companion! They are gay, friendly, non-aggressive, intelligent little dogs who are excellent with children and other dogs and cats.

Cavaliers are a great choice for families, singles, elderly or disabled dog lovers, and people who live in the city!

They are fairly low-maintenance, however their long silk coat requires daily brushing to keep tangle free.

A Cavalier is content with one or two short walks each day, they do however, love their comforts and thrive on human companionship.

They are not kennel dogs, nor are they suited to being left for long periods at home alone on a regular basis.

The main costs, after your Cavalier has been purchased, are food and the ever rising cost of veterinary cover should you be unlucky enough to need it on a fairly regular basis. It is advisable to have pet insurance. One of several good insurances available is Petplan:

Dog Collar

The Law in UK demands that every dog whilst on a highway or in a public place shall wear a collar with the owners name & address inscribed on the collar in some way.

Microchip

Although your pup should have a collar with an identity disc, discuss having your pet microchipped at the same time as it is vaccinated. Stray pups often lose their collars and it also helps protect your pet against theft.

A microchip is an electronic tag the size of a rice grain, which is inserted into the scruff of the neck by an injection. This remains in your pet throughout its life and your pet's identity number is kept on file at a central Petlog office.

All veterinary surgeries, dog pounds and animal rescue homes have an electronic scanner. Every stray dog is routinely scanned and if a microchip is present the owner can be traced through the central directory. With the new pet passport schemes a microchip is required if you plan to take your pup abroad.

Warning - if you move house don't forget to alert the Petlog of your change of address.
Hot Weather

During hot weather dog owners must pay great care when taking their dog out in the car. The dog's safety whilst in the car is important, and warmer weather brings with it the need to make sure the car isn't too hot for the dog.

Dogs can't sweat and they pant to control their body temperature. A car doesn't have to be very hot to make the dog pant, and if the panting can't control the body temperature, the dog's blood will heat to a very dangerous level and this will lead to a dreadful death.

If possible, it is best to leave the dog at home during hot weather. If you have to take him with you, then make sure that the car is very well ventilated. Carry a water supply and a bowl for him, on longer journeys stop at regular intervals.

You can buy special shades to keep the sun off the dog inside the car, and if you have it, use the air conditioning when the dog is with you.

Dogs die every year during hot weather; often in the time it took the owner to drink a cup of coffee in the local café.

During very hot weather it is advisable to exercise and walk your dog first thing in the morning and later in the day when the temperature drops.
