· SYRINGOMYELIA SYMPTOMS
· Excessive scratching, particularly around the neck region
· ‘Phantom scratching’ - does not make contact with the skin
· Tenderness around the neck and ears
· General skin sensitivity
· Intolerance of collar and lead
· Pain – chronic and sometimes severe, so that the dog cries out
· Restlessness, unable to get comfortable
· Intolerance of heat – seeking cool places
· Weakness in limbs
· Lack of co-ordination
· Obsessive licking or chewing of feet/legs
· Difficulty getting up or down from furniture
· Panting (because of pain)
· Reluctance to go for walks
· Does not want to be handled/cuddled
· Sad, haunted eyes (because of pain)
· Tiredness and lethargy
· ‘Fly-catching’ (licking the air for non-existent flies)
· Head rubbing/circling along the floor (headache/numbness/ ‘pins and needles’?)
· Difficulty eating food from dishes at floor level
· Stiffness, especially after resting
· Hearing impairment
· ‘Digging’ at furniture, furnishings, carpet (deflecting pain?)
· ‘Scoliosis’ (neck twisted to one side)
· Seizures
· Personality/behavioural changes (because of chronic pain)
