PUPPY FARMS
Thinking of getting a puppy? Make sure you know where it comes from.
Deciding to buy a puppy should be a careful, well-thought out decision. Make sure you don't unwittingly support the cruel practice of puppy farming - the mass breeding of puppies for profit, often with little regard for animal welfare.

A puppy farm is a term used to refer to a breeder or group of dog breeders who breed dogs solely for the purpose of making money. This is almost always at the expense of the dog’s comfort, health and well-being.

Puppies purchased from 'Puppy Farms' can often fall ill within weeks and die, though at first they appeared young and healthy. For the owner this is costly financially and emotionally.

It is widely believed that over 5,000 dogs per year are bred in a UK puppy farm. Many are packed into tiny pens, left to starve under extreme distress and discomfort. Under such conditions they often fight, injure and kill one another.

An estimated 300,000 unwanted and stray dogs are put down in Britain every year. The market is already flooded with dogs. Sanctuaries and rescue centres are over-run

Even if you do act cautiously and visit the farm to check the living conditions of the dogs, you can still be fooled. Many breeding farms have been cleaned up due to media and public pressure.

However, the inexperienced prospective puppy owner will not be able to spot other telltale sings of an irresponsible breeder namely, the breeding of bitches every season and neglect of hereditary problems. These puppies are likely to grow into bad tempered dogs as a result of not being socialised properly.

Hidden away from prying eyes, many thousands of female dogs are housed in agricultural barns and sheds, crudely adapted for the purpose of the mass breeding of dogs. Brood bitches exist solely to produce puppies, mere breeding machines for commercial gain by their owners. Breeding establishments operate throughout the UK, but since the mid fifties, West Wales has provided one of the major sources of puppies traded commercially throughout the world.
